128 Wussiest Song Tournament: Day 2

(Did I say "Day 2 will be posted Monday, August7"? Oops: I stink. But no more dallying...)

All votes must be received by 17:00:00 PST Wednesday, August 16. Day 2 will be posted tomorrow.

#1. "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" - Culture Club vs.
#16. "Dancing in the Dark" - Bruce Springsteen
Totally '80s...

#8. "She Believes In Me" - Kenny Rogers vs.
#9. "I'll Make Love To You" - Boyz II Men
These both seem astonishingly underseeded to me. Not to bias the second-round matchup or anything.

#4. "Superman (It's Not Easy)" - Five For Fighting vs.
#13. "Friends and Lovers" - Gloria Lorina & Carl Anderson
What would you think if I told you I'm only a man in a silly red sheet?

#5. "God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You" - 'NSYNC vs.
#12. "I Honestly Love You" - Olivia Newton-John
My wife tells me that the unrealized romance in "I Honestly Love You" is (would have been) someone cheating on their spouse. Discuss.

Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?

Lyrics are much wussier

I'll Make Love to You

- I am listening to Badfinger as I write this and wonder if they made the list

Superman

- John Ondrasik is the son of Andrew Gold

I Honestly Love You

There will be plenty of time to pile on boy bands later...

The Culture Club song is no better or worse than most other Culture Club songs, and is still better than anything by, say, Kajagoogoo. The Springsteen song, OTOH, besmirches the legacy.

Boyz II Men, at least until they open a chain of delicious roast-chicken restaurants. mmm...chicken.

Superman. Is there a band named for a sports term that DOESN'T suck supremely? Yellowcard, The Outfield, Five for Fighting...

its use in the film Dick saves the ONJ song from a second-round date.

1. This gun's for hire, but not if it means saying bad things about Bruce Springsteen songs. Even this one.

2. Abstain. I've never heard either.

3. Until it popped up on the wildcard list, I'd completely forgotten "Friends and Lovers." Its return to my consciousness is just another failure of today's Republic party.

4. Abstain. I've never heard the 'NSYNC song, and I can't guess whether it's wussier than "I Honestly Love You" without hearing it first. And that I will not do.

1. "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me"? If so, keep singing this song. Gack.

2. "I'll Make Love to You" really deserved a much lower seed, as far as I'm concerned.

3. Had never heard "Superman" until today (thanks to Altavista). "Friends and Lovers" is still wussier.

4. "I Honestly Love You". Definitely.

Hurt Me - wussy for The Boss is still less wussy than even the least wussy Culture Club song. Which would still be pretty darn wussy.

She Belives - if you need that sort of affirmation, you're a wuss.

abstain, don't know the #13 well enough.

NSync - heard this while grocery shopping yesterday, and they make ONJ sound butch by comparison.

She Believes in Me >> I'll Make Love To You

Generally I consider the trait of "wussiness" to be something that applies to males, so most often when there is a male singer vs. a female singer in this tournament, I'm probably going to give the male singer the wussy award.

That said, my votes are:
#1 Do You Really Want to Hurt Me
#8 She Believes in Me
#4 Superman (It's Not Easy)

(I like the Five for Fighting song, but for a song sung from the perspective of a superhero, it's kind of wussy. By the way, Gloria's last name is Loring, not Lorina.)

#5 God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You

(My reading of the lyrics of "I Honestly Love You" is that both the narrator and the person being addressed are married to other people.)

Do You Really Want to Hurt Me - Used at one time by the Dallas Desperados for introducing the opponent.

Tough call, as an 8-9 should be, but this one goes to the chicken man.

Superman

"Little More Time" - Extra credit for performing this with Alabama, creating country wussiness
